Dr. Yvette Calderon is the newly appointed Dean and Vice President for Equity in Clinical Care of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai Health System. In this role, Dr. Calderon will lead and coordinate efforts to ameliorate disparities in treatment and to improve health outcomes for the patients under our care. Dr. Calderon will collaborate with a diverse group of clinical and academic partners who have been engaged in like-minded work across the Health System and school. These partners include colleagues in the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, the Institute for Health Equity Research, department and service line leaders, and many others.
In addition, Dr. Calderon is an Emergency Medicine clinician, researcher, teacher and mentor. She is known for her clinical research that has focused on 2 major health disparities in the Bronx and the Lower East Side of Manhattan: HIV and Hepatitis C. She developed the first multimedia-based HIV testing and counseling program that has provided testing in the ED, inpatient, dental, and community pharmacies. Dr. Calderon has developed meaningful relationships with the New York State and City Department of Health and has received NIH funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) to support her endeavors. Dr. Calderon has served on three non-profit organizations: a community advocacy and service nonprofit group, a grassroots mentorship group and the emergency medicine board of certification.
Dr. Calderon has had many different types of leadership roles throughout her career. She has served as the Director of the Urgent Care Clinic, the Chief of Emergency Services, and the Interim Chief Medical Officer at Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital. She was responsible for the daily operations of the department as well as overseeing all regulatory and compliance mandates. Dr. Calderon was also the Associate Dean for the Diversity Enhancement Office at Albert Einstein Medical School. As the Dean, she built strategic alliances, strengthened and enhanced communication channels throughout the various departments in the medical school. She is currently a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Chair of the David B. Kriser Department of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Downtown. As the chair, Dr. Calderon oversees the fiduciary responsibility of the department. In addition, she has built a robust faculty development initiative to foster academic promotions. Her clinical research at Mount Sinai Downtown is now focused on screening interventions, best practices, and linkage to care models that target: patients with Hepatitis C, at high-risk patients for HIV infection that would benefit from Pre-Exposure prophylaxis, also known as PREP, and patients with an opioid and substance use disorder.
Dr. Calderon was selected as a board member of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. They are charged to develop and run the certification exams. She is a part of the strategic planning group and diversity and inclusion committee. She was the chair of the board of the Mentoring in Medicine organization for a one year term. Dr. Calderon has also served on the Latino Commission on AIDS as their physician lead for their HIV screening efforts.
Dr. Calderon was born and spent her childhood in the Lower West Side of New York City. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from Brown University in 1985 then returned to New York and earned her Doctor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1990. She completed her medical internship at Beth Israel Medical Center and a residency in Emergency Medicine at Jacobi Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident in 1993. She joined the faculty at Jacobi Medical Center, and she subsequently completed her Masters of Science in Clinical Research Methods at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2005.
