Born in Bayside, Queens. Studied biology and played rugby at Harvard. Stony Brook for medical school, and MGH/Brigham in Boston for EM residency
Dr. Nelson has lectured on ultrasound and medical education throughout the world. He authored several books, including the Manual of Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound, Emergency Medicine Oral Board Review Illustrated, the Acute Care Casebook, and the Atlas of Handheld Ultrasound. He chaired the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine Point of Care Ultrasound community and is the Chair of Mount Sinai Hospital’s Point of Care Ultrasound Committee. He is a member of the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships Board of directors and has served on the World Interactive Network Focused on Critical Ultrasound board as well. He serves as faculty for the Ultrasound Leadership Academy, the American College of Chest Physicians Fundamentals in Critical Care course, the Difficult Airway Course, and has led a number of CME conferences on basic and advanced ultrasound.
Harvard Medical School and Mount Sinai have granted him awards for teaching, and he was named Attending of the Year by the Mount Sinai Emergency Medicine residents. The Mount Sinai Institute for Medical Education selected him as a Master Educator level member. The American College of Emergency Physicians awarded him their National Faculty Teaching Award, he received the Emergency Ultrasound Education Award from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine
