Welcome to SinaiEM!

We are the Mount Sinai-Elmhurst Emergency Medicine Residency: a big, close-knit family in the most exciting and diverse city in the country. Thanks for visiting us!

We are a 4-year program with 25 residents per class. While our program is large, it’s hard to find one with more camaraderie and connection. There are endless opportunities to bond with your co-residents through living in Sinai housing, retreats to the beach and elsewhere, meeting up for Tuesday Night Fun (a Sinai tradition, every Tuesday!), or exploring any of the amazing activities offered in NYC!

Our residency prides itself on resident wellbeing, creating leaders in emergency medicine, fostering academic interests, and innovating new and robust educational opportunities.

We train primarily at three hospitals, giving clinicians a wide variety of experience across the spectrum of emergency medicine, including a significantly underserved population and unusually high acuity:

A cutting-edge, internationally-known quaternary care center on the border of Spanish Harlem and the Upper East Side. Here, you will learn to take care of some of the most complex patients you will ever see. Because we believe in the early integration of critical care, after intern year, you will refine your critical care skills through caring for the sickest patients in our high-volume resuscitation area.

A level I Trauma Center and city hospital. Elmhurst Hospital is located in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country. It is beloved by the residents for the critical care shifts and trauma resuscitations, in addition to taking care of a wide range of patients in desperate need of help and from around the globe (and picking up a little bit of every language!). The neighborhood offers the BEST food from around the world, so lunch is always guaranteed to be delicious!

A community hospital downtown whose faculty includes national leaders in social emergency medicine. It is an excellent location for residents to learn bread and butter emergency medicine, get the true community hospital experience, and learn when to transfer sick patients.

We use our 4-year format to provide unsurpassed career development in addition to our excellent clinical training. As a result, our residents routinely secure very competitive jobs and fellowships, even with recent competitive markets. We develop areas of expertise during residency through our Scholarly Tracks program, which devotes meaningful time, expert mentorship, and resources to develop professional growth in interests related to emergency medicine, such as ultrasound, critical care, social emergency medicine, toxicology, pediatric emergency medicine, and medical education among others. Some residents use these as “fellowship replacements” and obtain leadership positions immediately after residency, while others take advantage of the opportunity to become the best-qualified applicant for the fellowship of their choice. Others take advantage of the chance to deepen their knowledge and skills in a particular area of EM for its own sake.

Our large and accomplished alumni network stretches across the country at this point.  It’s a great resource for our residents as they prepare to enter the job market. We have alumni in all corners of the United States and across the globe!
