Residents: The following journal club articles are accessible by entering the login and password from my email. Once again we are breaking up assigned papers by class — you should be familiar with all the papers, but be prepared to answer the following questions about your class’ paper:

  • What was the treatment effect and how was it determined?
  • Who were the study subjects and are they similar to our patients?
  • What are the study’s limitations?
  • What is your current practice in this scenario, and is this study enough to change it?

EM-1: Hijazi R et al. Effect of topical alkane vapocoolant spray on pain with intravenous cannulation in patients in emergency departments: Randomised double blind placebo controlled trial. BMJ 2009 Feb 10; 338:b215. PMID: 19208703. Abstract. Paper.

EM-2: Marvez-Valls, EG et al. The role of betamethasone in the treatment of acute exudative pharyngitis. Acad Emerg Med. 1998 Jun;5(6):567-72. PMID: 9660281. Abstract. Paper.

EM-3: Griffith et al. Metoclopramide Versus Hydromorphone for the Emergency Department Treatment of Migraine Headache. J Pain. 2008 Jan;9(1):88-94. PMID: 17981511. Abstract. Paper.

EM-4: Fitch RW, Kuhn JE. Intraarticular lidocaine versus intravenous procedural sedation with narcotics and benzodiazepines for reduction of the dislocated shoulder: a systematic review. Acad Emerg Med. 2008 Aug;15(8):757-8. PMID: 18783486. Abstract. Paper.

Background: Pain Assessment Tools, page 8-11 in the July 2006 edition of EMPractice by Curtis & Morrell.  The sections on pathophysiology of pain and ED pain epidemiology are also recommended.

Optional Clinical Background:  Chang, AK, Gallagher, EJ, et al. Safety and efficacy of hydromorphone as an analgesic alternative to morphine in acute pain: a randomized clinical trial. Ann Emerg Med. 2006 Aug;48(2):164-72. PMID: 16857467. Abstract. Paper. Review. I’ll be referring to this paper’s intro, limitations and discussion in passing as it nicely touches upon some of the challenges of pain treatment and research in NYC.
